50th Birthday

Tuesday is my dad's 50th birthday. We went down to S. Cal this weekend to celebrate with him. He took the "over the hill" theme well, although this may be do to the fact that his Harley-riding friends kept passing him shots of tequila! It's interesting to see my dad these days. I think he's entered a bit of a second teenage-hood. Lately he brags about drinking a bit too much when going out with friends and how many car alarms he can set off when riding his motorcycle down the street. Whatever makes him happy I guess.

Chris and I stayed at my sister's house (Becca, the 5 month pregnant one). It was the first time I'd seen her new condo, it's pretty nice, although she hasn't shown much improvement in her housecleaning skills. Her house looks pretty much like her bedroom did when we were growing up - a bit dirty and pretty cluttered. Although she is 5 months pregnant and just moved a month ago, so I won't be too critical. She gave us a place to crash away from the party scene and made us feel very welcome.

We took Lichen with us as well. He did good on the ride down, although the trip took about an hour longer because we stopped more frequently and for great lengths of time to give him a chance to stretch his little legs. He played hard with Becca's little dog Princess (half chihuahua, half cocker spaniel) and seemed to have a good time. Although Princess will probably sleep for the next week after all the running around with Lichen!

Lichen is growing up so fast! I can't believe how much so. He's already outgown his first collar and we have to loosen the new one about once a week!

He is really smart too! He already knows "sit!" and is doing well walking with a loose leash. Like our previous dog, Pavlov, he likes to greet people by jumping, so we are teaching him that he doesn't get to be petted unless he is sitting. This strategy seems to work well, except when he is extremely excited and just can't contain himself. In which case he dances around in a circle with his butt just off the ground in a kind of half sit. It's really cute. Down, Heel and Retrieve are next on the list.
